Expressive but refined, these recent works are emotive experiments looking to express very sculptural forms contrasted with vandalistic mark making. There is a refined immediacy in the works and nods to both the classic and contemporary.
Artistic Biography
Born in Tasmania, and working predominantly in paint. Mat has developed a distinctive artistic voice that explores themes of identity, a collision of old and new, and the intersection of internal and external psychological spaces. His practice encompasses a wide range of formats, including painting, digital animation, sculpture, and large-scale public murals. As an artist, Mat continues to challenge conventional narratives, creating works that not only captivate visually but also invite deeper reflection on experiencing the world around and within.
Mat studied at the University of Tasmania, where he earned a Master of Contemporary Arts (Visual Arts), as well as being awarded First-Class Honours in his undergraduate studies. Throughout his career, Mat has received numerous accolades, including the University of Tasmania Travel Scholarship and the Arts Tasmania International Travel Grant, which have supported his artistic exploration both in Australia and abroad. His works have been exhibited in prestigious collections such as the Luciano Benetton Collection in Italy and have been featured in prominent public art projects at home in Tasmania, including the City of Launceston Traffic Box Project and large-scale murals for TasWater.
Mat’s recent Solo Exhibition of Paintings and the first showing of his new digital animation series ‘Symphonies,’ both at the University of Tasmania, and group show SEVEN at MONA Foma are some highlights of his practice.
As an artist, Mat Carey continues to challenge conventional narratives, creating works that not only captivate visually but also invite deeper reflection on the world around and within.
